Ambassador (ret.) Anthony Gardner
Ambassador (ret.) Anthony Gardner has spent more than twenty years of his career advising on U.S.-European affairs, as a government official, lawyer and investor. He is a Managing Partner at Brookfield Asset Management, based in London. He served as United States Ambassador to the European Union from March 2014 to January 2017. His 2020 book Stars in Stripes, covering his tenure as Ambassador, was included in the list of best foreign policy books of 2020 published by Foreign Affairs magazine. Prior to this he was Managing Director at a growth capital private equity firm based in London where he managed financing, legal and tax structuring issues related to the firm’s acquisitions and divestitures. He has served in senior roles at Bank of America, GE Capital and GE International, all based in London, as well as at international law firms in London, Paris, New York, and Brussels, and was Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council in the White House. He holds a BA in Government from Harvard University, an MPhil in International Relations from Oxford University, a JD from Columbia Law School, and a Masters in Finance from London Business School. He is a board member of Iberdrola S.A. and a member of the advisory boards of the Centre for European Reform, the German Marshall Fund and the European Policy Centre.
